Which Butlins Resort Is Best for Families?

Butlins is designed around family holidays, but after visiting all three UK resorts, we quickly realised that each offers a slightly different experience.

Bognor Regis felt the easiest resort to manage as a family because everything is so compact. Walking distances are short, which makes a real difference when carrying swimming bags, pushing younger children in buggies or returning to accommodation after an evening show. The modern hotel accommodation also adds convenience for families wanting a more hotel-style break.

Minehead offers a more traditional seaside holiday atmosphere. The resort feels larger and more spread out, but this also gives it a sense of space. Accommodation choice is important here, as some areas are a longer walk from the Skyline Pavilion. During our stay in the Bayside Apartments, however, we found the location excellent, with sea views and easy access to the main facilities.

Skegness sits somewhere between the two. It feels more self-contained and activity-focused, with spacious accommodation options such as the Maple Walk Premier Lodges. Families looking for extra room, quieter surroundings and modern lodges may find Skegness particularly appealing. It also benefits from being close to Ingoldmells and the attractions around Skegness itself.

Overall, if convenience is your priority, Bognor Regis probably edges it. For a traditional seaside atmosphere, Minehead remains our favourite, while Skegness offers some of the best accommodation for families wanting more space and comfort.

Which Butlins Is Best for Older Visitors?

One thing we noticed when comparing all three Butlins resorts is that many of the things that matter to older visitors also matter to families with young children. Short walking distances, lifts, easy access to food, and convenient accommodation locations all make a big difference.

Bognor Regis felt the easiest resort overall for older visitors. It is compact, flat and simple to get around, with most areas no more than a short walk away. The hotels also have lifts, and staying in the Ocean Hotel meant we could access dining without going outside, which was very convenient.

Minehead has more of a traditional seaside feel, with the beach, town and harbour close by. The resort itself is larger, so accommodation choice matters more. We stayed in the Bayside Apartments, which worked extremely well because they had sea views, parking underneath the building, lift access and a very convenient location near the main facilities.

Skegness felt more spread out than Bognor Regis but still manageable, especially if staying in the Maple Walk Premier Lodges. These gave us more space and a quieter feel, although the resort can involve more walking depending on where you are staying and which venues you are visiting.

For older visitors, Bognor Regis probably wins for ease and convenience, Minehead wins for traditional seaside atmosphere, and Skegness is a good option if you prefer lodge-style accommodation with more space.

Which Butlins Has the Best Accommodation?

One of the biggest surprises during our Butlins stays was just how different the accommodation feels at each resort.

Bognor Regis has the most modern and hotel-focused accommodation. During our stay in the Ocean Hotel, we particularly appreciated the lifts, indoor access to dining and the short walks to the Skyline Pavilion and entertainment venues. It felt more like a contemporary seaside hotel break than a traditional holiday park.

Minehead offers the widest variety of accommodation, ranging from caravans to luxury apartments. Our stay in the Bayside Apartments was one of the highlights of all our Butlins trips. The sea views, undercover parking, lift access and close proximity to the main facilities made it an excellent choice for families and older visitors alike.

Skegness impressed us with its Premier Lodges at Maple Walk. The lodges provided noticeably more living space, a quieter setting and a more self-contained feel. For families wanting extra comfort, outdoor space and a lodge-style holiday experience, Skegness may offer the best overall accommodation option.

Ultimately, the best accommodation depends on the type of break you prefer. Bognor Regis feels most like a hotel holiday, Minehead provides the greatest variety, while Skegness stands out for families seeking space, comfort and a modern lodge experience.

Which Butlins Has the Best Location Outside the Resort?

One thing we always look for on family breaks is what there is to explore beyond the resort itself, and this is where the three Butlins locations feel quite different.

Minehead probably has the strongest location overall if you enjoy traditional seaside towns, heritage attractions and coastal scenery. The resort sits right beside the beach, with easy access to the seafront, harbour, cafés and shops. It is also home to the historic West Somerset Railway, where steam trains run along the coast towards Watchet. Nearby attractions include Dunster Castle, which is only a short drive away, and one of our favourite scenic journeys in the UK – the drive across Exmoor to Lynton and Lynmouth, complete with their famous cliff railway and spectacular coastal views.

Bognor Regis feels more urban and compact, but still offers direct access to the promenade, beach and town centre. One advantage we particularly liked is that the railway station is within walking distance of the resort, making day trips very easy. Historic Chichester is only a short train journey away, while Arundel Castle is another excellent option for families looking to explore beyond the resort.

Skegness has a slightly more self-contained feel, but benefits from being close to Ingoldmells, the traditional seaside attractions of Skegness and Fantasy Island. We enjoyed taking the open-top bus into Skegness itself, which is ideal if you enjoy a classic British seaside atmosphere, amusement arcades and a good portion of fish and chips overlooking the sea.

For us, Minehead just edges this category thanks to its combination of beach access, heritage railways, castles and beautiful countryside. Bognor Regis is probably the easiest resort for exploring by public transport, while Skegness offers plenty of traditional seaside entertainment within a short distance of the resort.

Our Overall Thoughts

After staying at all three Butlins resorts, we came away feeling that there isn’t a single “best” resort – it really depends on the type of break you want.

Bognor Regis impressed us with its modern feel, compact layout and convenience. Everything seemed close together, making it easy to manage as a family and particularly appealing for older visitors or anyone who prefers shorter walking distances. We also enjoyed the newer PlayXperience complex, which offers activities such as shuffleboard, interactive games and a relaxed sports bar atmosphere. It felt like a welcome addition for multigenerational families, teenagers and adults looking for something a little different from the traditional Butlins entertainment.

Minehead remains our favourite for atmosphere outside the resort itself. The beach, harbour, steam railway, nearby villages and spectacular scenery around Exmoor give it a more traditional seaside holiday feel. We especially enjoyed staying in the Bayside Apartments, which combined sea views with excellent access to the main facilities.

Skegness offered some of the best accommodation we experienced, with the Maple Walk Premier Lodges providing plenty of space and a quieter setting away from the busier entertainment areas. The resort also works well as a base for exploring Ingoldmells and Skegness, while still delivering the classic Butlins mix of shows, activities and family entertainment.

If we were choosing purely for convenience and accessibility, we’d probably pick Bognor Regis. For the best surroundings and opportunities to explore beyond the resort, Minehead would edge it. For families wanting modern lodge accommodation and plenty of space, Skegness is an excellent choice.

The good news is that whichever resort you choose, Butlins still delivers what it has always done well – giving families plenty to do together, whatever the weather.
