Lizard Point Holiday Park

We stayed at Parkdean Lizard Point Holiday Park near Helston in Cornwall during a family break exploring the Lizard Peninsula. Set close to some of Cornwall’s most dramatic coastline, it’s a useful base for visiting places including Lizard Point and Kynance Cove.

We chose one of the park’s budget-friendly bungalows and, despite it being our cheapest Parkdean stay so far, we were pleasantly surprised. It was clean, warm and comfortable, and Samuel actually preferred it to some of the more expensive lodges we’ve stayed in.

Accommodation

We booked one of the more budget-friendly bungalows at Lizard Point and, if we’re honest, we weren’t expecting too much. It actually turned out to be one of the biggest surprises of our stay.

The bungalow was clean, warm and comfortable, with everything we needed for a family break. Samuel even said he preferred it to some of the much more expensive prestige lodges we’ve stayed in at other holiday parks!

There wasn’t an allocated parking space with our bungalow, but in practice this wasn’t a problem at all. We were able to park directly outside every time we returned to the park, which made unloading and heading out for the day really easy.

Our verdict: Don’t automatically dismiss the cheaper accommodation options at Lizard Point. Ours was excellent value and considerably better than we expected.

Food and Drink

There were several food and drink options around Lizard Point Holiday Park. There was a fish and chip shop, Street Eats, and a restaurant where we had a very good breakfast.

On one occasion the restaurant was short-staffed, so we did have quite a long wait. However, the staff handled it really well — they kept us updated throughout and apologised several times for the delay. Things don’t always go perfectly on holiday, and for us it’s often how a problem is dealt with that makes the difference.

There is also a large clubhouse and bar, providing somewhere to have a drink and enjoy the evening entertainment.

For something quick, we also did one of our usual holiday-park tricks and picked up hot sausage rolls and pasties from the on-site shop — useful when you don’t want a full sit-down meal.

Just outside the park there was also a kebab van, which was very handy. One thing worth knowing when we visited was that it was cash only, so it’s worth having some cash with you if you plan to use it.

Things To Do Nearby

One of the biggest reasons to stay at Lizard Point Holiday Park is the location. Some of Cornwall’s most spectacular scenery is within easy reach.

Kynance Cove was absolutely stunning and one of the highlights of our trip. There is also a lovely café there, making it somewhere you can spend a good part of the day. However, it’s worth knowing that getting down towards the cove involves slopes and uneven paths, so it could be difficult for visitors with limited mobility.

We also visited Lizard Point itself. We parked in Lizard village and walked from there, which was quite a trek, although there is a National Trust car park much nearer to the coast. Back in the village we found a lovely ice-cream shop selling locally made ice cream — definitely worth stopping for!

Another of our trips was to St Michael’s Mount, one of Cornwall’s most famous landmarks and an easy attraction to combine with a stay in this part of Cornwall.

There’s so much to explore around the Lizard Peninsula that the park works really well as a base for getting out and seeing this part of Cornwall.

One thing worth bearing in mind is that Lizard Point Holiday Park isn’t somewhere we’d choose if we wanted to leave the car behind for the whole holiday. There wasn’t really anywhere we could comfortably walk to from the park, so for exploring the surrounding area you’ll either need a car or need to use the local bus service. For us, having the car made visiting places such as Kynance Cove, Lizard Point and St Michael’s Mount much easier.

Getting there and Map

[Driving directions, ferry, bus, train.]Lizard Point Holiday Park is near Helston and is a long drive from South Wales. You’re heading a long way down into Cornwall, so this isn’t a journey we’d underestimate – particularly with children in the car!

That said, we were pleasantly surprised by how much the main road journey through Cornwall had improved since some of our earlier visits. The drive felt easier than we remembered, although the final part of the journey naturally becomes slower as you head further down towards the Lizard Peninsula.

If you’re travelling from South Wales as we did, we’d allow plenty of time, take a break on the way and treat the journey as part of the holiday rather than trying to rush it.

Once you’re there, having a car is particularly useful. As we’ve mentioned above, there isn’t much within easy walking distance of the park, and many of the places you’ll probably want to visit – including Kynance Cove, Lizard Point and St Michael’s Mount – involve driving or using public transport.

Our Thoughts

Lizard Point Holiday Park was one of the surprises of our Cornwall trip. We’d booked one of the cheaper bungalows and weren’t expecting anything particularly special, but it turned out to be clean, warm, comfortable and excellent value. Samuel even preferred it to some of the more expensive prestige lodges we’ve stayed in.

We also liked the park itself. It felt relatively flat and easy to get around, there was plenty for families to do, and we had a good choice of food and drink. Even when the restaurant was short-staffed and we had to wait longer than expected, the staff kept us informed and couldn’t have been more apologetic.

The location is both a strength and something to consider. You’re in a beautiful part of Cornwall with places such as Kynance Cove, Lizard Point and St Michael’s Mount within reach, but this isn’t a park we’d choose if we wanted to leave the car behind and walk everywhere. A car – or use of the local bus service – makes exploring much easier.

For visitors with limited mobility, we’d also separate the park from the surrounding area. We found the park itself pleasantly easy to get around, but some of the spectacular coastal locations nearby can involve steep or uneven walking.

Overall, we’d happily stay at Lizard Point again. It wasn’t the fanciest Parkdean accommodation we’ve ever booked, but it proved that paying less doesn’t necessarily mean enjoying the holiday less.
