Tencreek Holiday Park

We stayed at Tencreek Holiday Park near Looe in Cornwall during one of our family campervan trips. It’s a large independent holiday park in a lovely position on the Cornish coast, with touring and camping pitches as well as holiday accommodation.

The park may already look familiar if you watched Channel 5’s Happy Campers: The Caravan Park. Tencreek was one of the holiday parks featured in the programme, which followed the staff and guests behind the scenes during the busy holiday season.

We’d actually watched the programme before our visit, so it was interesting arriving somewhere we’d already seen on television. We’ve since also stayed at Unity Holiday Park in Somerset, another park featured in the series.

What we remember most about Tencreek is the location, the views and the traditional family holiday atmosphere. It makes a great base for exploring Looe and this part of Cornwall while still having plenty happening back at the park.

Our stay wasn’t recent, so some facilities may have changed since our visit. This review is based on our own experience and footage from that trip, with current information checked where appropriate.

Our Campervan Pitch

We stayed at Tencreek in our campervan on an electric hook-up pitch. The pitch itself was a good size, with plenty of room for the van and everything we needed around it.

Tencreek is a very hilly park, and our pitch was almost on a shelf cut into the hillside. The toilet and shower block wasn’t far away, but getting to it involved walking up quite a steep slope – something worth knowing if you have limited mobility.

The facilities themselves were excellent, though. We were particularly impressed with the toilet and shower block, and the staff at Tencreek were extremely helpful during our stay.

For us, the combination of a good-sized electric pitch and excellent facilities made Tencreek a good touring park, although we’d take the hilly layout into account if we returned.

And I’d tweak the Quick Summary accommodation row to make your particular stay obvious:

Facilities

Tencreek has a good range of facilities for families. There is an indoor swimming pool, which Elaine and the boys used during our stay. It wasn’t the most modern pool we’ve come across at a holiday park, but it was perfectly fine and they enjoyed using it.

Outside, there is a table tennis table, an enclosed sports area and a really good children’s play area. The play area was one of the better outdoor facilities on the park and gave the boys plenty to do.

The main thing to bear in mind is that Tencreek is a very hilly site, so depending on where your pitch or accommodation is located, getting to the facilities can involve some steep walking. From our campervan pitch, even the nearby toilet and shower block involved walking up a fairly steep slope.

Food and Drink

Tencreek has a good clubhouse which also serves as the park’s restaurant and entertainment venue. We had a very good breakfast there during our stay and also ordered takeaway pizzas, which were handy when we didn’t fancy cooking at the campervan.

There isn’t a separate fish and chip shop, but takeaway food can be ordered from the bar. The on-site shop also sold hot pasties, which we took full advantage of — we were in Cornwall, after all! They were really good.

The clubhouse is also the main venue for evening entertainment. During our stay we watched a live tribute act, so there was plenty going on without having to leave the park in the evening.

Things To Do Nearby

Tencreek is well placed for exploring this part of Cornwall, and we managed to fit quite a lot into our trip.

Before arriving at Tencreek, we’d spent a rather unusual night sleeping in a former cell at Bodmin Jail Hotel, followed by the full Bodmin Jail experience. It’s certainly one of the more memorable ways we’ve started a campervan holiday!

From Tencreek itself, we left the campervan behind and walked to the bus stop for the journey into Looe. Once there, we went crabbing in the harbour, had some excellent fish and chips and explored the town.

One of the highlights was taking a fast RIB boat trip from Looe to nearby Polperro. It was a very different way of seeing this beautiful stretch of the Cornish coast – and considerably faster than our usual sightseeing!

Tencreek also makes a useful base for exploring more of Cornwall, so there’s plenty to do beyond the park if you’re staying for several days.

Getting there and Map

Tencreek Holiday Park is near Looe, and getting there was fairly straightforward – once we stopped listening quite so enthusiastically to our sat nav!

Travelling from Bodmin, our sat nav managed to take us down one of those Cornish single-track roads with grass growing along the middle. We got through in the campervan, but it certainly wasn’t the route we’d have chosen ourselves.

The final approach to Tencreek also includes a single-track section of road, although the park regularly accommodates touring caravans, motorhomes and other large units, so larger vehicles clearly do use the route.

If you’re travelling in a campervan, motorhome or towing a caravan, we’d recommend checking Tencreek’s own arrival directions rather than relying entirely on your sat nav, particularly for the final part of the journey.

Once we’d arrived, we left the campervan on our pitch when visiting Looe and used the local bus instead. The bus stop involves a reasonable walk from the park and is on a busy road, but the service dropped us right in the centre of Looe, which was very convenient.

Our Thoughts

[Your personal opinion, who it is good for, whether you would return.]We really enjoyed our stay at Tencreek and would happily return. It felt like a proper traditional family holiday park, with friendly and helpful staff, good facilities and a great location for exploring this part of Cornwall.

For us, the touring facilities were particularly good. Our electric campervan pitch was a generous size, and the toilet and shower facilities were excellent. The clubhouse was another highlight – we had a very good breakfast, enjoyed the takeaway pizzas and watched live entertainment in the evening. And, being in Cornwall, we couldn’t resist the hot pasties from the shop!

The main thing we’d want people to know before booking is that Tencreek is very hilly. Our pitch was almost on a shelf cut into the hillside, and even though the toilet block wasn’t far away, reaching it involved a fairly steep walk. The park’s location also isn’t the most convenient if you want to walk everywhere. We used the bus into Looe, which worked really well once we reached it, but the bus stop itself was a reasonable walk from the park and on a busy road.

Those things are why we’d give Tencreek ★★★★☆ rather than five stars, but they certainly didn’t spoil our holiday. The staff were extremely helpful, the facilities were good and we loved being able to leave the campervan on its pitch and take the bus straight into Looe.

Most importantly, Tencreek worked brilliantly as a base for a Cornwall adventure. Between Looe, Polperro, Bodmin and everything else within reach, there was far more to the holiday than simply staying on the park.

Would we return? Definitely – although next time we’d make sure the sat nav didn’t send us down another Cornish lane with grass growing up the middle! 😂
